Why I Trekked with Trek Relief Twice: A Returnee's Perspective by Rob Winkler

Rob W. in Nepal

Quotables

There aren’t enough words to describe how incredibly beautiful, humbling, and inspiring these last 10 days in the Himalayas have been. We trekked up 13,000 feet into the snowy abyss of the Langtang Valley where I feel like multiple lifetimes were lived out. Through TrekRelief, we were not only able to make our dreams come true but also the dreams of the local villagers who suffered from the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015. We built new foundations for a home and a school. We danced in snow with colors raining from the sky as we celebrated Holi festival, we played music, spun fire, we laughed, we cried, we pushed our bodies and minds to overcome challenging conditions and so much more... this was so special. Big thanks to the amazing staff that opened their hearts to us and for teaching us the way of life the Nepali way.

Trek Relief, thank you for THE BEST TRIP OF MY LIFE!! All aspects of this trip exceeded all expectations; came to lend helping hands, left with a whole new family and an overflowing heart. The crew was INCREDIBLE, felt so safe and protected and cared for at all times... we explored so many villages, fully emerged ourselves in the culture, enjoyed the BEST local cuisines, drank warm tea and shared memorable stories, played music and danced and celebrated life ON TOP OF helping rebuild the foundation of a youth school and house for an elderly couple in need... giving back and also receiving SO MUCH :) Thank you for the life changing experience.

Where do I begin. This trip has been hands down the greatest journey of my life.. Beyond the insane sights I witnessed, and the amazing bonds I formed, it was the emotional journey that was most profound. I saw the power of having a loving, open, supportive community and it’s ability to catalyze growth and authenticity. I discovered the gift of giving, and the deep sense of fulfillment it can lead to. I even discovered facets of myself which I am now starting to embrace and will eventually channel into more positive ripples throughout this globe.

It was such a pleasure meeting the amazing staff of Trek Relief. Over the course of our journey we had the opportunity to develop a personal relationship with all members of the group. Helping rebuild with the people of Langtang was intensely rewarding. Every moment was a joy and a pleasure. The entire experience was intensely emotional and I believe I can speak for the whole group when I say it has changed the course of our life and future actions. Thank you Trek Relief, we will never forget what you have given us and we hope to join you again soon.

Where do I begin? The overall attentiveness and flexibility of the staff was just out of this world. Although this was our first trip of this magnitude, I have never seen a staff care for the party as well as these guys did. From the first minute we met they all knew my name and made sure we were all comfortable at all times.

Trek Relief is one of my favorite heart and eye opening adventures I have experienced. This adventure has challenged me spiritually, emotionally, and physically and I am grateful for the people and experiences along the trip. The staff was very welcoming and accommodating and we were blessed with the best care and service along our journey. Both the trekkers and staff bonded over singing Nepalese songs, fire spinning, and snow ball fights throughout our trek. By the end of our journey, we became family. My heart is overflowing with love, thank you Trek Relief for an adventure of a lifetime!

Words cannot describe what this experience has meant to me and the impact it’s had on my life. As the days went on Trek Relief went from being an organization I was involved in to my family. The volunteer opportunities are tangible and you will find yourself working side by side rebuilding a home with the owner of the property or see the children that will one day go to the school you are rebuilding. The sherpas and porters are some of the most amazing people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and I can’t wait to see them again on my next trip. I’ve fallen in love with Nepal, it’s people, and it’s beauty.

What an overwhelmingly sublime experience and a breath of fresh alpine air... leaving the Himalayas with new perspectives of what makes life happy and full and a deeper appreciation of what makes us all human. I recommend Trek Relief to anyone who is looking to do some good with these hands and hearts of ours while opening their eyes to new cultures and corners of the globe. Serious gratitude and respect to the whole Trek Relief family- Candice, and all the local guides, sherpas, porters who blazed the way for us and so much more.

Trek Relief really brings together good people doing good things into a challenging but magical setting and pushes them to open up their third eye... without tapping into that empathetic side of ourselves, we become passive observers and this simply cannot be. Being active is key to being human and Trek Relief provides you a window to climb out of your own comfort zone. I’m incredibly grateful for what we accomplished in such a short time and for future adventures together. Namaste!

This was the first time I traveled for volunteer work, and I discovered that it is a much more fulfilling way of experiencing a new place. Not only do you get to explore the area by trekking, but you’re also able to help the local communities by rebuilding and bringing tourism to villages that desperately need it. Overall I highly recommend Trek Relief to anyone who is up for an unforgettable adventure.
Thank you for everything.

Trek Relief gives you that opportunity at a time when the region needs it the most. The world-class staff keeps you fit, ready, and cared for so that you may exhaust yourself enjoying the beautiful trail, yet still find the energy to give thanks, through hard work and care, to the Langtang people.

My heart feels so full with the love and positive energy on this trip. Each and everyone has inspired me in so many ways. I’ll be dreaming of days walking in snow, drinking milk tea, and listening to sounds of singing and laughter as we make our way through the Himalayas.

The trek itself was beautiful and extremely rewarding, but the people I met and the stories they shared about their culture and their life was inspiring and incredibly humbling... going to Nepal really gave me perspective on my life and what was truly important. If you’re looking for a bit of adventure and also want to see the real impact your contribution can make to a community, do this trek!

Bachan (our giude) and Pemba (our porter) are two people I will probably remember for the rest of my life. We spent time during our breaks and meal times to share personal stories, life history, future prospects, etc., with them and it really humbled my soul. I cannot believe how hard they work despite their circumstances... The locals were wonderful people too- so honest, kind and filled with joy. It was such a great experience for me.

Everyone we met, especially all the locals, along the trail and at our guesthouses and teahouses were absolutely wonderful. Everyone was so kind and generous... Such a beautiful representation of Nepal... it was above and beyond anything we could have experienced... We had some really wonderful, deep conversations about Nepal and its struggles, its government, its history, and more.

Traveling with Trek Relief helps you feel more connected to the country and its people... And gives you an experience you would not otherwise be able to have on your own.

Trek Relief team is doing such wonderful job in housing last year’s earthquake victims who have lost their homes and some their love ones. From the good management of the founder to the rippling generosity of people, it’s not just the victims who benefit but the nation as a whole as this charity trekking contributes a lot to the country’s tourism, most especially as well, to the many small scale and local business people.

An incredibly beautiful trek with an even more beautiful purpose! All of our connections with the trekking guide and porter, teahouse hosts, construction crews for our volunteer work, and locals, were immensely deepened through our purpose of relief support. All in a gorgeous setting that is also stunning even in the aftermath of the earthquakes, in which seeing the landslides first-hand was also incredibly grounding and an invaluable tie to the overall mission.
